A woman driving erratically early in the morning has been identified as the cause of traffic on the M4, and has been arrested.

Queues built up on the M4 motorway eastbound between junctions 17 and 16 throughout rush hour around 9am this morning, October 22.

Police closed one lane of the motorway and an eyewitness reported seeing a “recovery van by the side of the road and a silver car had ploughed into the undergrowth off the carriageway”.

The driver, a woman in her 30s, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and is in custody ready for questioning.

A police spokesperson said: “We responded to reports of a vehicle being driven erratically on the M4 between junction 17 and 16 before 5am this morning.

“A woman in her 30s was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and remains in custody for questioning.”

South Western Ambulance Service were also contacted.
