A suspected stolen car caught fire after crashing near a house in Swindon.

Police received a call from a member of the public on Friday who reported that a man had taken his car without his consent.

Officers in a police car later spotted and followed the suspected vehicle thief.

The driver mounted the kerb, crashed into a parked car on the driveway of a property in Winterslow Road, and then caught fire.

No injuries were reported. Officers handcuffed the driver and attempted to determine whether he was under the influence.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, aggravated vehicle taking, driving without a licence or insurance, and criminal damage.

"He has been remanded into custody."
