A request for a lower speed limit and a one-way system on a controversial 50mph road will be considered by councillors.

This paper has previously reported on residents raising concerns over the safety of the current 50mph limit on Saltersford Lane, linking the A4 Bath Road to Patterdown Road in Chippenham.

Some fear the speed of the road is too fast due to its proximity to the large Hunters Moon housing estate.

Now a highways improvement request has officially been submitted calling for safety improvements to the lane.

It suggests that the speed limit on the road is lowered to 30mph alongside the introduction of a one-way system and traffic calming measures, like chicanes or speed bumps, to deter drivers from breaking any new restrictions.

The person requesting the changes warned that action needs to be taken to prevent a “serious accident.”

“I am a nurse and need to sleep safely and soundly. The speed limit should have been reduced before planning permission was granted for homes.

“Motorists have the A350 which is sensible for 50mph. This lane is not. Please consider families, children, wildlife, domestic animals.

“There is a bungalow six feet away from this lane. Pollution is horrendous.

“I love Chippenham, but I absolutely hate this lane, at 50mph it needs urgent attention.”

The request will now be considered by Chippenham town councillors during a planning committee meeting on Thursday, October 24.

If they support the proposal, they will forward it to the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Group which will decide what action can be taken.

Residents have already labelled the current situation “horrendous.”

One said: “It's so dangerous for pedestrians. Some motorists have no regard for us.”

The latest proposal may be complicated by the fact that Wiltshire Council has already struck a deal which would see the northern part become 30mph and the southern part become 40mph.

This would be funded by the developers of another planned estate to the east of the road but would only be implemented if the developer moves ahead with its scheme.

The council recently confirmed that it had no plans of its own to move forward with a change to the speed limit on the route.
