The cause of a large emergency response by the fire service and police this morning has been confirmed.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has said it responded to reports of a property fire on Marlborough High Street around 9.25am on October 17.

Crews found a fire from an electric mains cable had been put out on arrival - but were concerned about a possible gas leak.

Gas engineers were called and a safety cordon erected, closing part of the High Street while investigations were done.

There was no gas leak found and the fire service ended their response around 11.14am. High Street is reopened.

A spokesperson said: “We were called to High Street, Marlborough at 9.25am this morning (17 October) to reports of a small property fire. 

“Crews from Marlborough, Pewsey and Swindon attended and found that a fire involving a mains electric cable was out on arrival. 

“There were concerns about a possible gas leak, so engineers attended from both SSE and SGN to make the area safe. 

“A safety cordon was put in place, which closed part of the High Street, while investigations were carried out but it has now been confirmed that there is no gas leak. 

“Our stop was at 11.14am and the road has now been reopened.”
