Plans for parking restrictions will be considered as part of a scheme to turn a town centre road into a one-way street.

Last year, a proposal was put forward by Marlborough’s Town Centre Working Party to transform The Parade, off the High Street, into a partially one-way system.

At the time, the plans suggested a barrier to prevent traffic travelling up the hill past The Lamb Inn and coming out onto New Road by The Bear.

This scheme now appears to be taking another step forward as a plan for the system, including parking restrictions, has been drawn up.

Town councillors are set to discuss this design at a planning committee meeting on Monday, October 21, and will discuss how it may impact access, traffic flow, and parking arrangements.

The plan includes amended road markings, traffic islands, and signage, and the removal of parking spaces at several points along the road.

When the plans were first revealed last year, multiple businesses on the street voiced concerns about any potential changes to parking in the area.

At the time, Izzy Parmenper who worked at The Lamb Inn, said: “I don’t drive, but I can imagine it could cause chaos around the Parade as I think parking could be a real problem for us.

“We’re an inn as well as a pub which means that our guests need to park, and we don’t have our own personal parking spaces so currently guests and visitors have to park on the street.

“This already isn’t ideal for our guests, but I can imagine that if we had a one-way system it would make the whole situation for people visiting the town even more difficult trying to park and get to us.”

“We were very concerned about that as we need cars to be able to get to us so that people can pop in quickly for the bits that they need.

“Although it might still affect business a bit, a one-way system wouldn’t be so bad because I assume our parking would still remain as it is.”
