An Indian restaurant in Wiltshire has won back-to-back awards at a prestigious national event recognising the UK’s best curry houses.

The Taj Mahal in Chippenham has been named the winner of the Best Recommended category at this year's Curry Life Awards 2024.

Owner Arju Miah, who runs the venue alongside his two sons, received the award at an event at the London Marriott Hotel in Mayfair on Sunday, October 13.

The result means the Best Recommended award has been won by Taj Mahal two years in a row after they brought the same title back to Chippenham in 2023.

Speaking after the ceremony, Mr Miah's older son Ahkik said the family was “incredibly proud” of defending their title.

“We like to try different flavours and combinations, but we always combine this with the tradition that our customers love.

“We like to spend time with our customers, they really enjoy the fact that we make the effort to introduce them to new dishes.”

Taj Mahal has been established in Chippenham for over three decades and has spent that time perfecting its classic curry dishes.

Last year Ahkik revealed that the restaurant’s most popular dishes were the chef’s garlic chilli chicken, korma, and masalas, although he had noticed a growing appetite for spicier dishes like vindaloos and jalfrezis.

The Curry Life Awards is now in its 15th year and is run annually by Britain’s renowned curry magazine Curry Life.

Editor Syed Belal Ahmed said the event was an opportunity to recognise the best of the best in the UK’s curry industry.

He added: “A major aim of the awards has always been to highlight best practice going on across the country, so that everyone has the opportunity to learn from the best, something that has always been a driving principle behind Curry Life itself.

“Over the many years we have been staging the awards, we have seen major improvements in standards and quality being offered to customers, to the point where several restaurants are now in a position to challenge for accolades such as Michelin stars.”

British curry houses have an annual turnover of over £4 billion and each year they are celebrated at the awards event.

The awards night was attended by a host of famous faces, including Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Wes Streeting.
