Work has started on the major £2 million expansion of a service station off the M4 in Wiltshire.

A three-acre extension has begun at the Chippenham Pit Stop, an award winning services off junction 17 of the M4.

This significant project will include the creation of over 100 overnight lorry parking spaces at the site, bringing the total capacity to 189.

Managing director David Hatherell was “delighted” that the project had kicked off and said it would meet calls from the government for an increase in overnight truck stop facilities in secure environments.

He said: “Because we are in a rural area and our extension is surrounded by open country, drivers can anticipate enjoying quiet nights safe in the knowledge that they are in a secure location.”

The current scheme is due to be completed by the end of January 2025.

Chippenham Pit Stop has already invested in expanding its restaurant and kitchen, improving the shower and toilet facilities, and boasts extra night-only provision and an all-weather gym.

Dr Roz Savage, the newly elected Liberal Democrat MP for the South Cotswolds, visited the site following the start of the project.

She added: “The Pit Stop already offers much more than simply a place to park, and I look forward to seeing the extended facility in action.”
