A resident has called for the speed limit on a “horrendous” 50mph road through a Wiltshire town to be lowered.

The 50mph section of Saltersford Lane in Chippenham runs between The Pheasant Roundabout on the A4 Bath Road and the railway arch where the lane meets Patterdown Road, near the Rowden Gate development.

The lane runs alongside the Hunters Moon development, near the A350, and has pedestrian links to the estate as well as being an important road for those to the south of the town.

Concerns have been raised that the speed limit is too high for a road that borders such a large housing development.

One resident claimed pedestrians are currently at risk because of fast cars on the lane.

“The only entrance or exit to our estate goes straight out onto a blind bend with motorists approaching at 50mph and above.

“A new housing estate neighbours this lane, the homes were built for families. The owners have children and pets. The lane is so dangerous.”

Wiltshire Council confirmed a deal has been struck with the developers of a planned estate to the east of the road, which would see the northern part become 30mph and the southern part have a 40mph speed limit implemented.

But these changes would only be introduced if the developer moves ahead with its scheme, and would first be subject to a public consultation.

Cllr Nick Holder, cabinet member for highways, said: “When planning permission was granted for the 70 dwelling residential development on the eastern side of Saltersford Lane, it was with associated highways conditions.

“This included the stipulation that Saltersford Lane to the north of the Taff Wells access would become 30mph, with the remaining southern section down to Queens Bridge and through to Patterdown Road reduced to 40mph.

“A new shared use footway connecting into the existing Hunters Moon access, plus a connection to the existing shared use footway on Easton Lane, would also be required.

“These proposed changes would only be enforced if the developer starts work on the residential dwellings.”

The council has no plans of its own to reduce the speed limit.

Cllr Holder added: “There are not currently any proposals being considered by the council or the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Group for a speed reduction for Saltersford Lane.

“The council has no other plans to take forward a change to the current 50mph speed limit.”
