A Wiltshire wildlife rescue which fought for the best care for its animals has closed down after facing issues with a relocation attempt.

Wiltshire Reptile Rescue was set up by Steve Todman of Marlborough in 2021, who had 72 reptiles living in his front room at one point as he tried to move the rescue to dedicated premises in Swindon.

However financial issues related to the move and personal stresses led Steve to make the difficult decision to wind up his rescue work in late September.(Image: Steven Todman)

While he did not want to comment on the closure, a public statement on social media from September 27 stated: “Not a positive update today, I’m afraid. The rescue in moving yes. But it is also ending.”

The reptile lover explained the overwhelming work and stress of the rescue was negatively affecting his personal, family and social life.

In a post three days later, he explained: “We have dealt with flooding, electric needing upgrading, and a month of not being able to move the rescue into this premises but still having to pay, amongst other stuff.

“But through all that we have saved over 90 reptiles this year alone. The decision to close the rescue wasn’t an easy one but I think it was for the best.

“This page will remain active. The closure of the rescue will be slow. We still have animals needing treatment and homes.

“When all of this is done the name of the page will change but the goal stays the same. Education and to build a community of like-minded keepers. (Image: Stephen Todman)

“We are always here for advice and help but we will not take in any more animals.

“Thank you to all of you that have supported us through this. We hope you stick around to see the future with us!”

In March, Steve explained he was trying to raise £2,500 towards a move to Purton so he could take better care of the reptiles.

He told the Advertiser: “It's been an obsession since I was a kid. My nan used to buy me encyclopedias on reptiles and I would read them cover to cover.

“Now I just enjoy working with the animals. Anyone who knows me or has seen me working with the animals knows that's the case and I am at my best when I am working with the animals.”
