A 'careless' driver who attempted to drift a BMW over a busy junction has been banned from the roads.

George Harry Betts, 24, of Bristol Road in Allington, is a repeat offender known to the courts for his previous driving offences.

On May 1, 2024, Betts sped past an off-duty police officer on Sandpit Road in Calne and then was caught on video attempting to drift the BMW he was driving over a mini roundabout.

A post on Calne Police Facebook page reads: "A man who carelessly overtook an off-duty police officer on a residential road has been disqualified from driving.

"Betts overtook an off-duty police officer at speed on Sandpit Road, Calne, with junctions near and offside in a BMW 535D he claimed he was test-driving on May 1, 2024.

"Shortly afterwards, Betts was captured on video attempting to drift the car on a nearby mini roundabout."

When questioned by police he claimed he was "test-driving" the car that he was not insured to drive, and then tried to persuade the registered owner of the vehicle to lie to the police.

Appearing at Salisbury Magistrates Court on October 3, Betts pleaded guilty to careless driving with no insurance and was issued a two-year driving disqualification.

He was also ordered to pay a total of £365 in fines and court costs.

“Betts is a repeat offender who clearly shows no regard for the law," said PC Hobbs, of Wiltshire's road policing unit.

“It was only by mere chance that nothing was coming in the opposite direction when Betts was driving in such a poor manner, that a collision did not occur.”
