A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving following a four-vehicle collision in Swindon.

Emergency services rushed to an incident on the A3102 Swindon Road between junction 16 of the M4 and The Sally Pussey’s Inn at Royal Wootton Bassett during rush hour on October 8.

The road was closed from 9am and motorists were advised to avoid the area due to standstill traffic queuing from Marsh Farm in Royal Wootton Bassett to the M4 and into Swindon, later extending into Hook.

Police have confirmed a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of drug driver and has been released pending investigation.

One person was also taken to hospital by ambulance.

Three hours after the road was brought to a standstill, traffic began to ease on Swindon road just after 12pm and the road reopened fully around 1pm.

A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: “We responded to reports of a road traffic collision involving four vehicles on Swindon Road, Royal Wootton Bassett around 8.20am this morning (08/10).

“A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and has been released under investigation.”

“One person was taken to hospital as a precaution.

“The road was closed just off the Junction 16 roundabout and reopened around 1pm.”
