A heartbreaking tribute has been released after a “jolly” emu who went missing from his field was found dead.

Irwin the emu went missing from the Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary on Monday, September 30, and it was feared he may have slipped into the river at the bottom of his field.

After seven days of thorough searches by volunteers and members of the community, Irwin’s body was found in the River Avon, near Truckle Bridge, on Sunday, October 6.

It is believed that he slipped and stumbled into the river during play, when the emus were chasing each other around.

While emus are naturally strong swimmers, the sanctuary believes the incident happened at night, a time to which the bird’s vision is not best suited.

Because of the recent heavy rainfall, the banks of the river had been broken, creating a sodden and slippery area at the bottom of the field.

Following the discovery, Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary has paid tribute to Irwin, who gave many people love and cuddles during his time in Wiltshire.

A spokesperson said: “Irwin was a jolly emu who loved cuddles, and especially cold showers during summer whereupon he would roll over before standing up and shaking himself dry before looking to us for another dowsing. And another. This was him at his happiest.

“He was also feisty and loved to chase the young emus around until they got bigger and gave as good as they got.

“He is succeeded by Cha Cha, Emmy, Momo, and Doble who live happily in his name, and might easily live to the ripe old age of 25 years, as emus are hardy animals.

“Boomer now has the job of being the most senior emu at the sanctuary. A role he will aptly fill given his previous job as Malmesbury crime-fighter.

“Irwin gave us much love and lived happily at The Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary. He will never be forgotten. Irwin will live on in all our hearts. So long Irwin. Precious boy.”

“Your spirit of hope and positive energy has given us much strength this past week.”
