An anti-racism group that mobilised in Swindon amid far-right riots has planned further meetings.

While Swindon did not experience a large-scale disturbance, the town and police were braced amid country-wide violence and disruption.

Following rumours of a protest on August 7, Swindon residents gathered as part of Swindon Stand Up To Racism to guard asylum hotels, mosques and immigration services.

The rumours did not materialise and the group continues to organise public meetings to spread a message of unity - with a meeting scheduled this month.

A spokesperson said: “Swindon Stand Up To Racism mobilised on 7th [August] to oppose the rumoured far-right march and possible attacks on asylum seekers in Swindon. (Image: Repi Begum)

“This came after seriously violent attacks across the country, including an attempt to set fire to a hotel housing asylum seekers.

“Swindon Stand Up To Racism encourages discussions and the building of a strong, multicultural community where we really understand the underlying issues causing our present living standards and support each other in fighting for better conditions for us all.”

A public meeting on Thursday, October 10, 7 to 10pm will be at Broadgreen Community Centre, Salisbury St, Swindon SN1 2AN.

Admission is free with speakers and an opportunity for public questions and thoughts.

The group will be attending the London Stand Up To Racism demonstration on Saturday, October 26.
