Work is continuing on a proposed project to turn a narrow Wiltshire road into a one-way street.

Last year businesses on Union Road in Chippenham launched plans to make the route, which runs between the back of the railway station and the busy New Road, one-way only.

The scheme would mean traffic can only travel down the hill, to make the road safer and more attractive for pedestrians.

These proposals were backed by Chippenham town councillors and put to the Local Highways and Footways Improvement Group last year.

Council leader Cllr Richard Clewer has now provided an update on the progress of the scheme, warning that no decision has been made at this stage.

He said: “Work is continuing on this project.

“An update will be presented to the Chippenham LHFIG at the next meeting in October.

“At the moment no decisions have been taken by the group.”

When the plans were lodged, architects at Artel31, which has an office on the street, produced technical drawings of what Union Road could look like.

Director Richard Charles-Jones said: “We want it to be a more inviting place.

“It just doesn’t work at the moment and it’s not pedestrian-friendly.”

He added that the project would be a boost for the high proportion of independent businesses in the area.
