An investigation into the effectiveness of one of the busiest junctions in a Wiltshire town is ongoing.

Drivers have long complained about the safety of the junction between Langley Road, New Road, Malmesbury Road, and Park Lane, at the entrance to Hathaway Retail Park in Chippenham.

In recent years the roundabout was replaced by traffic lights in a change funded by the retail park developers to reduce congestion.

But traffic remains an issue at peak times and many junction users have complained the layout is “confusing and dangerous.”

Last year drivers reported multiple crashes and near misses.

Wiltshire Council took full control of the signals last year, after some remedial works, and has since been monitoring the junction.

It is now considering whether improvements can be made.

Council leader Cllr Richard Clewer said: “During the summer we were collecting data and monitoring the junction to better understand how it operates.

“Traffic patterns have changed since the junction was altered by developers and following the end of the pandemic.

“The data collected will now be analysed by our consultants to identify if any alterations could be made to improve the junction for users.”
