A car has been photographed submerged and abandoned on a flooded road, despite it having been closed to traffic.

The B3106 Holt to Staverton road north of Trowbridge regularly floods and is physically blocked using gates when it does to prevent cars getting stranded.

The B3106 is currently closed both ways between B3105 New Terrace and The Tollgate Inn.

The gates were fitted in 2019 after cars regularly ignored flood warnings on the road and the drivers had to be rescued by emergency services.

A black Suzuki Swift is pictured with its wheels underwater on the road-turned-river, which filled up following heavy rain on Monday, September 23.

When the gates were fitted, councillor Trevor Carbin said: “It has been a bit of a struggle and has taken three years.

“If it makes life easier for the fire and rescue service then it will have been worthwhile because they won’t have to go in and rescue people from the flood waters.”

Prior to the gates, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service carried out 22 operations since 2004.

Thirty people, including children, were rescued from the floods and more than 20 vehicles recovered.
