Roadworks will be in place on one of the most important routes through Wiltshire during the next stage of a £7 million improvement scheme.

Last December, Wiltshire Council began work on a major project to increase road safety on the A3102 through the county, following a high number of fatal and serious collisions on the key route.

In total 35 upgrades will be implemented on the A-road, stretching from junction 16 of the M4, near Swindon, to the A350 at Melksham, via Royal Wootton Bassett and Calne.

As well as low-level interventions, like improved signage and road markings, some busy junctions might be completely redesigned over the next year.

The latest stage of the major project will focus on Calne Road in Lyneham, where the current pedestrian crossing will be upgraded to Puffin technology, to improve safety for pedestrians.

From Monday, October 14, temporary two-way traffic lights and a temporary signal-controlled pedestrian crossing will be in place to allow this work to be completed.

Council leader, Cllr Richard Clewer said: “Upgrading and replacing crossings is important to keep all road users – and particularly pedestrians – safe.

“This crossing has come to the end of its designed life, so we’re taking this opportunity to upgrade it to a Puffin crossing, as part of the A3102 Safer Road Scheme, which will see nearly £7m spent on improving safety for all road users on this busy road.

“A key priority set out in our business plan is to have well-connected and safe communities and these upgrades will ensure residents can cross safely in Lyneham.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this work, but this crossing needs to be upgraded.”

The Safer Road Scheme will also include works to the footways adjacent to the nearby Co-op supermarket, which will be extended across the vehicle access.

Tactile paving will also be removed to give pedestrians priority and the footways near to the crossing will also be resurfaced.

The council says there will be no loss of car parking spaces as a result of these changes.

Junctions that have been earmarked for proposed improvements include the A3102 and Stoneover Lane at Royal Wootton Bassett, the A3102 and Stanier Road at Calne, and the A3102 and A342 near Bromham.

The details of these proposed upgrades are currently being developed for implementation in 2025.
