Dozens of CCTV cameras are being installed in a Wiltshire town centre to tackle rising anti-social behaviour.

Work has begun to install cameras at 29 locations around the centre of Malmesbury in a bid to keep visitors safe and crack down on anti-social behaviour.

Malmesbury Town Council says this £37,000 scheme has been planned for some time, and it is hoped the additional CCTV will act as a deterrent for offenders.

Cllr Steve D’Arcy, the chair of the council’s policy and resources committee, has been overseeing the project.

“CCTV is a proven deterrent, and residents and businesses have been calling for the installation for some time so we’re delighted that this project is now coming to fruition.”

The locations where the cameras will operate include the long stay car park, Cloister Gardens, Gloucester Street, Gloucester Road, Abbey Row, Cross Hayes, Market Cross, Malmesbury Abbey, and various points along the High Street.

Redhand CCTV has been carrying out the installation of the cameras, which are expected to be operational by late September.

They will then be monitored by the town council team.
