Wiltshire Council issues warning over bins being left out

The council has received reports that bins are being left out and rubbish has been building up on Snuff Street in Devizes, due to some residents and shop owners not using their bin storage areas.

Cllr Dominic Muns, the cabinet member for waste, revealed that officers will now be writing to those on the busy retail street to remind them to remove their bins after collection.

Shop owners have already been spoken to by the council’s highways teams and residents are urged to remove bins as soon as possible after they have been emptied.

Cllr Muns added: “We haven’t received any reports from the public or businesses about rubbish being left in the town centre.

“However, our highways team has reported that residents and shop owners in Snuff Street are not using their bins stores and leaving their bins out on the street, which has encouraged small amounts of rubbish to build up.

Rubbish in West Central car park (Image: Trevor Porter) “Our highways Team has spoken with the shop owners, and we will be writing to the residents to remind them to use their bin store and to return their bins to the store as soon as possible after collection.

“We will also be contacting the management company to ask them to ensure residents have easy access to the bin store so that bins can be stored away easily.”

Concerns over this issue were raised on social media after a post about rubbish being left on the ground near bins at the West Central car park, behind The Shambles.

This led to residents pointing out other parts of the town suffering from similar problems.

At the time, Nigel Carter said: “Could you add Snuff Street to the list please? Tenants of the flats are leaving their waste bins in the street, despite having a bin store, and when I last looked there was a smashed TV lying in the street.

“It is not a good look on what is supposed to be the ‘golden link’ between town and the Wharf.”

Anybody who spots fly-tipping has been urged to report it.

Cllr Muns said: “We would encourage people to report waste that has been fly-tipped online or via the MyWilts app.”
