The regeneration of a Wiltshire shopping centre could involve the construction of 200 new homes as the project reaches another milestone.

Developer Acorn Property Group has released more details of its proposals to transform Emery Gate Shopping Centre, on Chippenham High Street, into a “multifunctional hub.”

Following an initial consultation earlier this year, a second consultation is due to start on Saturday, September 14, during which residents can have their say on more detailed plans.

Ahead of this period, Acorn has confirmed it is hoping to build around 200 sustainable homes on the site, which it says will reduce pressure on the green areas on the outskirts of town.

The scheme also includes a “revitalisation” of the retail and leisure offering at Emery Gate, with over 3,500 square metres of additional commercial space promised.

It is proposed that this would include a mix of retail, leisure, and food and beverage options to create “a lively day and evening economy.”

Following feedback from the initial consultation, Acorn says it is focusing on introducing open spaces throughout the site and providing a variety of different-sized retail units to accommodate businesses.

The plans would also see increased integration with Island Park and the River Avon, with residents told there will be greater clarity on car parking proposals in the latest plans.

The scheme has proved contentious amongst residents and councillors, but Acorn has insisted the transformation of the shopping centre is necessary to reverse a decline in footfall.

Project manager Caroline Wall said: “We have reviewed and incorporated the feedback received on our initial proposals for Emery Gate and are thrilled to now bring forward more detailed plans, signifying the largest economic investment Chippenham has seen in decades.

“Our plans aim to secure the future of Emery Gate, making it a destination of choice for residents and visitors, while contributing to the overall regeneration of the town.

“Once again, we strongly encourage the community to have their say on our plans for the future of the town centre.”

The consultation will run until September 28 and during this time interested parties can share their thoughts, with details on Acorn’s project website.

There will also be a drop-in session at the centre on September 14 from 10am to 4pm where people can meet the project team and view the proposals in more detail.

This consultation stage comes ahead of a formal planning application being lodged, which is expected to happen later this year.
