Demolition work is underway at a former furniture showroom in Swindon.

JCBs and dozens of staff can be seen at the site on The Island clearing away part of the building which was formerly Garden of Eden Cane.

Garden of Eden Cane, a windows and doors company headquartered in Swindon, was informed in May 2024 that it had to be out of its home on Edison Road imminently.

The business was previously based on The Island, Edison Road, but has now relocated to a new site at Dorcan 200 on Murdock Road.

Four months on from the move, demolition work has begun to tear down the old site.

A spokesperson for Garden of Eden Cane said: "We sold the building and the people that bought it are demolishing some of it.

"They will be putting a new roof and things on and doing it up.

"It was always in the plans to take the offices down, Swindon just doesn't need that many offices like that anymore."

Although the company would not specify what would replace the old showroom and no publicly available planning permission has been found, Garden of Eden has confirmed that the site won't become a housing development.

"I know that they're not building houses there, that's for sure," the company added.

It is understood that the new owners are looking to convert the warehouse section into three separate smaller warehouses and lease them out.

Speaking previously to the Adver, director Helen said Garden of Eden Cane had wanted to move to a smaller premises.

"Going forward we want to specialise more rather than doing everything that there is," she said.

"Also, bigger buildings take a lot of upkeep and we don’t need the space, so we just need a smaller place to run it from."
