Residents near Swindon are 'horrified' after fish in the town lake were spotted floating dead on the water.
The dead fish at Jubilee Lake were seen by multiple residents in Royal Wootton Bassett on Thursday, September 5.
Those visiting the area reported "a very bad smell coming from the lake and through the wooded area" and "dead fish being put into black bin liners" at the nature reserve just off Brinkworth Road.
The sight raised significant concern among the community, who have now been told the sudden death of the fish is due to a 'water quality issue'.
In a statement released by Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council, residents were urged to keep their dogs far from the water until further notice.
"We have been made aware of an issue within the lake that the oxygen levels have dropped, causing the loss of many fish," said a spokesperson for the town council.
"The Environment Agency and Wessex Water have been on-site, we are working with them to take appropriate measures.
"The Angling Club have been advised and there will be no fishing until further notice.
"Until we have more information, please also refrain from dogs entering the water."
The town council has reassured residents that it aims to resolve the issue as soon as possible but many say the damage has already been done.
