Weeks of delays are expected on a Wiltshire A-road while a toucan crossing is renovated.

Wiltshire Council will begin work at the crossing on the A3102 Silver Street in Calne, which links Fynamore Gardens and Hazel Grove, on Monday, September 23.

The signal-controlled crossing is shared by pedestrians and cyclists but is nearing the end of its lifespan and will need refurbishment to continue working.

The roadworks are scheduled to last until Wednesday, October 16 and during this time temporary two-way traffic lights will be in place.

Temporary pedestrian and cyclist crossing signals will also be installed and roadside vegetation clearance will be carried out.

Cllr Nick Holder, cabinet member for highways, said: “We have an extensive stock of traffic signals across our highways network, and it is important we undertake regular refurbishments when assets are nearing the end of their designed lifespan to ensure they continue to work correctly.

“It is also an opportunity to upgrade the technology used to increase efficiency.

“Works of this nature inevitably result in some disruption.

“However, we have designed these works to minimise disruption, with temporary two-way signals in place so that the road can remain open.

“We would like to thank people in advance for their patience while we carry out these essential works, which we aim to complete in a timely manner.”
