A lifelong Wiltshire resident has launched a new taxi business in his hometown.

Craig Townsend, also known as ‘Towner’, has lived in Devizes all his life and worked in manufacturing for over a decade.

But last Saturday, he officially became his own boss when he launched the town’s newest independent taxi service, Towner’s Taxis.

On his first morning in business, Mr Townsend was already busy and headed over to Trowbridge to pick up his first customer.

The 43-year-old told this paper he had been overwhelmed by the support from the community for his new venture.

He said: “It’s gone really well and everyone has been so positive so far, it’s more than I ever expected.

“I’ve had over 800 followers in less than a week on my page and I’ve had so many shares, likes and messages.

“It’s overwhelming to get that support so soon, I love Devizes so I can’t wait to get going.”

Mr Townsend explained that he decided to start his own business because he didn’t want to regret not taking the risk in the future.

He is confident his people skills and knowledge of the town will help him find success.

The cabbie added: “I just love driving and I’m a people person anyway, plus I know quite a lot of people here because I’ve lived in Devizes all my life.

“I wanted to give it a go, so I did a little bit and really enjoyed it, then I thought I would go for it.

“I didn’t want any regrets 10 years down the line, a lot of people say it’s a risk leaving a secure job, but I’m excited and I’m confident I’ll make it work.”

Mr Townsend will initially be the only driver for Towner’s Taxis, but he is hopeful he may be able to expand the firm in the future if things go well.

“Hopefully we can build it up a bit and who knows, maybe we’ll have a few more drivers”, he said.

“I’ve been working with some of the other companies in town too and we’re doing what we can to work together, and chuck work each other’s way.”

The company has promised customers “reliable and friendly” fares around the Devizes area, but will also offer trips to airports, ports, and train stations.
