Two derelict buildings in Chippenham are to be demolished and replaced with flats after Wiltshire Council has approved an application for an “unattractive” and “run-down” site.

The land in question is located in the centre of the town, at 49 and 50 New Road, opposite the Brunel-built railway viaduct.

Applicant, Ms Sherrena Dugani is the executor for the estate of her mother who owned Michael Antony Estate Agents in New Road.

According to the application, Ms Dugani has sought the best use for the derelict buildings which were previously used as storage by the agency.

The plans described the site as “unattractive” and “run-down”, and claimed the new flats will be “modern, exciting, and attractive”, with the design having been altered following feedback from consultees.

Referencing the site’s position on the edge of a busy road, the application stated: “We imagine Brunel himself would have wanted to see something bold and crafted to help this jarring transition.

“We suspect he would have utilised a mix of old and new here to strengthen and enhance the streetscape which ‘peters out’ a little on this corner.”

It concluded: “The design is of good quality and well considered, in line with the drive for to the push for interesting and bold architecture whilst respecting and responding to the context.”
