A free app offering heritage walking tours in some of Wiltshire's most historic locations has added three new trails for the whole family to try.

The Explore Wiltshire heritage app first launched in June 2023 and was trialled in several Wiltshire towns such as Bradford on Avon, Chippenham and Cricklade.

The app provides interactive maps, walking trails, hunts, trivia and challenges to help users uncover each town’s history, as well as photographs, audio and visual clips.

Following the huge success so far, the app has now been expanded to include the hidden secrets and cultural sites of Melksham, Tisbury and Wilton.

This brings the total number of free walking tours up to 13. They include Bradford on Avon, Chippenham, Cricklade, Devizes, Malmesbury, Marlborough, Melksham, Pewsey, Salisbury, Tisbury, Trowbridge, Warminster and Wilton.

As well as adding three new trails, the latest update to the app also includes a treasure hunt based on Warminster’s Longleat Safari Park.

Users can locate 14 special posters of animals found at the park at businesses around Warminster town, with a prize for one of the lucky winners.

“Whether you are a visitor or a resident, the Explore Wiltshire app is a great way to discover the rich and diverse heritage of Wiltshire and get active this summer," said Councillor Richard Clewer, Leader of Wiltshire Council and Cabinet Member for Heritage, Arts and Tourism.

“Vibrant, well-connected communities is a key priority for us and the app is a great way for people to support the local economy as they visit local amenities found along the trail.”

The app has been created by Wiltshire Council in collaboration with town and parish councils and Bristol-based app developer Calvium, and features introductions by Channel 4 Time Team's Phil Harding.

Developers say they hope the app can help boost the local economy by bringing in tourists who may also stop for a lunch break in town or visit other local shops while in the area.
