Shoppers have been urged to support independent cafes, coffee shops and other businesses after the “sad” closure of a town centre Costa branch.

Costa Coffee recently announced that it would be closing its branch on the corner of Maryport Street and The Brittox in Devizes, on Thursday, August 15.

Its nearby store in the Market Place will remain open.

The news has sparked sadness amongst both staff and regular customers, who expressed their disappointment at the imminent closure on Facebook.

Kev Chandler said: “It's sad when any business closes, of course independent businesses are my preference, but chains are still an important part of the infrastructure of any town.

“They employ local people and provide services people need or want.”

“Shame, good people-watching spot on the stools, the staff are lovely and helpful too”, said Liz Day.

Others pointed to the loss of jobs the closure may bring to the town centre.

Carrianne Ryall-Gould added: “It's sad that most of the staff may lose their jobs too.

“It's not just a company, it is people's livelihoods.”

But many took the opportunity to point out the wide variety of independent coffee shops and other venues that remain open in the town.

Shoppers have been urged to support these businesses to help them continue to thrive.

Chris Greenwood said: “We need to support our local businesses and enjoy the diversity they offer.

“Biddles Cafe, and the Soup Chick in The Shambles, both provide excellent service and friendly company.”

Di Waterman added: “So now try Black Dog, Soup Chick, The Brownie, Cosey Cafe, Muck & Dunder, Reeves, Condado Lounge, At Table 31, New Society, Traybake, and loads more independent or small chain coffee shops and bakeries.

The prominent Costa unit has now gone on the market as the search for a new occupant commences.

It is available to let for a price of £17,500 per year.

Costa explained that the branch had been run by one of its franchise partners but will be closing for trade this month.

A spokesperson said: “Our Costa Coffee store on Maryport Street, Devizes, which is owned and operated by one of our franchise partners, is closing for trade on Thursday, August 15.

“The local community can continue to enjoy their favourite Costa coffee at our nearby store on Market Place, Devizes.”
