A closed takeaway has been demolished after nearly 40 years of serving customers in a Wiltshire town ended this year.

Shoestrings Chargrill had been a feature of Audley Road in Chippenham since 1985 when it was first opened by teenage brothers Stephen and Martin Webb.

But the building, which had been fenced off in recent weeks, is no more.

Both the former Shoestrings unit and the adjacent store, Allumino Ltd, have been torn down ahead of a scheme to replace them with a two-storey multi-use building.

The branch closed temporarily last year due to equipment failure but never reopened as the building’s landlord confirmed he would be putting approved plans for the redevelopment of the site into action.

The decision to permanently close the branch was made earlier this year and Stephen and Martin will now focus on their branch at The Bridge, which remains open.

Meanwhile, a proposal given the green light by Wiltshire Council last year will see a new building, with a ground floor retail space and a first floor two-bedroom apartment, erected on Audley Road.

Inspire Architects, the firm that acted as an agent for the landlord during the planning process, has previously said the development would be a “massive improvement” on the buildings that were there before.
