Visitors to a popular nature reserve in Wiltshire will be faced with limited access this summer due to an 'urgent' footpath closure.

Stonebridge River Reserve on the eastern edge of Marlborough is a popular green space for families and children to visit, particularly during the school holidays.

The nature reserve has been partly owned by Marlborough Town Council and the Action for River Kennett group since 2011 and is commonly accessed using the Stonebridge Lane public footpath.

But families hoping to visit the chalk stream this August will need to plan ahead, as Wiltshire Council is set to 'urgently close' a footpath section of Stonebridge Lane for 12 days while excavation work is carried out.

Works will begin on August 19 and the footpath is due to open again on August 30.

“The road shall be closed to all traffic in the interests of public safety, to enable Wiltshire Council to carry out works to excavate down the footpath," said a spokesperson for Wiltshire Council.

"This is for a new electricity connection into a new site at the plot adjacent to Little Thatch, Stonebridge Lane, that will reduce width and prevent pedestrian access.

“No alternative route is available but access will be maintained for residents and businesses although delays are likely due to the nature of the works."
