A new pedestrian crossing has been proposed for a busy Wiltshire road as part of a £2m scheme to improve road safety.

The planned crossing could be put in place on the B3108 near Hartley Farm at Winsley.

Cllr Johnny Kidney, the Wiltshire Council ward member for Winsley and Westwood, says the proposed new crossing near Danes Rise will make life safer.

Residents from Winsley have campaigned for many years to get a pedestrian crossing on the busy road between Bradford on Avon and Bath.

More than 10,000 vehicles a day use the main road to Bath and Limpley Stoke which has 40mph and 50mph speed limits.

The traffic-controlled pedestrian crossing will be built as part of a £2 million investment by Wiltshire Council in road safety improvements.

Cllr Kidney said: “For many years now I have been campaigning for road safety improvements on the B3108.

“While this has been primarily focussed on reducing traffic speeds on the B3108 at Winsley and on Winsley Hill, I have also been pressing, along with the Parish Council in Winsley, for safer pedestrian and cycle crossing of the B3108 to access Hartley Farm and the lanes.

“I am pleased to be able to confirm that following many years of pressing the council on the issue, including numerous site meetings I have held with the relevant cabinet members to show them first-hand the issues faced by residents, Wiltshire Council has now allocated funding for pedestrian crossing facilities from the village to Hartley Farm as part of a £2m package of road safety improvements across the county.

“I will provide further details on designs, timescales for delivery etc as they come forward, however I have been told that this will be a comprehensive scheme which I understand would include pedestrian-controlled traffic signals.

“This would have a knock-on effect of calming traffic speeds on this stretch of the B3108.

“I have assured highways that while I very much welcome this investment into pedestrian safety after many years of campaigning on the issue, I will nonetheless continue to lobby the council for a complete review of speed limits on the entire length of the B3108 through Winsley and Limpley Stoke.”

The county has already reduced the speed limit to 40mph on a stretch of the road from Downs View in Bradford on Avon to the foot of Winsley Hill.

But it goes back up to 50mph on the stretch beyond the Avonpark retirement living complex at Winsley.
