Great Western Railway has issued a warning to travellers on its services after a global IT outage hit train operators.

Severe IT outages were reported across the country and further afield on the morning of Friday, July 19.

These issues have caused planes to be grounded and sparked delays to railway services in the UK, with many companies confirming “widespread issues” were affecting their operations.

At the time of writing, the cause of the issues remained unknown but Microsoft said it was taking “mitigation action.”

Now Great Western Railway has issued a warning to those using the trains in Wiltshire, Swindon, and the South West.

The railway company confirmed that, as of around 9.15am, it was still enjoying “good service” on most of its network with no significant delays in the Wiltshire area.

But passengers should be aware that the IT outages may affect station departure boards, and prevent them from showing the correct information.

A spokesperson for Great Western Railway said: “Due to an IT issue impacting several train operators, station departure boards may not be showing correctly.”
