Shoestrings in Chippenham fenced off amid demolition plan

Shoestrings Chargrill operated on Audley Road in Chippenham for 40 years before owners Stephen and Martin Webb closed the branch for good this year.

The brothers first opened the takeaway in 1985 as teenagers and have since gone on to open a second location at The Bridge, which remains open.

The Audley Road restaurant closed last November due to equipment failure and the Webbs decided not to reopen it due to plans to demolish the building.

Last August, their landlord Gerald Mitchell had a planning application to demolish both the takeaway and the adjacent store, Allumino Ltd approved.

Mr Mitchell has secured planning permission to replace the businesses with a two-storey multi-use building including a single ground floor retail space and a two-bedroom apartment and garage.

This scheme may be set to move closer to completion after the two units were fenced off.

Mr Mitchell has previously declined to comment on the future of the site.

The agents who acted on his behalf, Inspire Architects, have previously spoken of the benefits the scheme would bring to Audley Road.

Architect Nick Charlton, previously said: “I think it’s a really good scheme and a massive improvement on what’s there if it gets built.”
