An industrial unit which caught fire in the early hours of the morning near Malmesbury has now been left charred and blackened by the blaze.

Firefighters from Malmesbury, Chippenham and Tetbury were all called to an industrial unit on the B4040 between Malmesbury and Easton Grey at 3.35am on Thursday morning (June 27).

According to the fire service, the unit was based next to several nearby businesses and horse stables so the fire posed a significant risk of spreading, and one horse was led to safety as a precaution.

In total, it took four breathing apparatus wearers and four hose reels working in the early hours to be able to bring the blaze under control, and relief crews later attended from Chippenham and Nailsworth as well as a water carrier from Royal Wootton Bassett.

It is unclear exactly why the building belongs to or how the fire first started, but the site has been left charred and blackened by the blaze.

"We have now left the scene but the incident remains open so that a reinspection can be held this evening," said a spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"A fire investigation is also underway."
