A herd of 50 cows were spotted running riot through a Wiltshire town on Tuesday afternoon as police officers rushed to the scene.

The incident was first spotted at around midday on Tuesday, June 25, as approximately 50 cows marched through Anchor Road in Calne.

Wiltshire Police were called to close the road and deal with the escapees, and several members of the public helped the Rural Crime Team officers to herd the cows back into nearby fields.

Although no significant damage has been noticed a small number of cows made their way into residents' front gardens.

All of the cows were eventually coaxed out of gardens and off the road, and have now been left in the care of their owner.

It has not been made clear how the cows escaped.

"We would like to pass on our thanks to everyone who helped us today," said a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police.
