Councillors have backed designs for a planned Starbucks branch despite raising fears it could lead to a “Vegas style” town centre.

Starbucks was recently announced as the future occupant of one of the former Wilko units on Chippenham High Street, by building owners The Harkalm Group.

The former store has been split into three separate spaces, one of which has already been confirmed as a Tesco Express, following the closure of the chain’s Emery Gate superstore.

While Starbucks does not need planning permission to open a branch in one of the other units, it recently applied for permission to install related signage.

The design for the potential coffee house prompted some objection from town councillor Adam Ward over the fact a proposed hanging sign was illuminated.

He said: “I’m a bit concerned… I think it could be the thin end of a wedge so I do find it objectionable and would recommend we reject it on that basis.

“If we give in now, you set the bar a little bit higher and subsequent applications could then expect more illumination.

“Before you know it you’ve got that Vegas type vibe taking over.”

After some discussion at a planning committee meeting, councillors voted not to object to the application, as part of a Wiltshire Council consultation which remains ongoing.

Other councillors were more supportive of the designs.

Cllr John Scragg added: “We pride ourselves in the town on having a lively nighttime economy.

“Assuming Starbucks is open a little later, a bit of illumination makes the place look more alive, so I’d be quite happy.

“It’s something that attracts people.”

Starbucks would not confirm if it had plans to open a new Chippenham High Street branch when originally approached for comment.

A spokesperson said: "We are always looking for new locations and opportunities to bring the Starbucks experience to customers in the UK, but at this time we have no news to share about plans for Chippenham."

But property developer The Harkalm Group has announced that contracts for the unit have been “exchanged” with the chain.

A spokesperson added: “We are delighted to announce we recently exchanged contracts with Starbucks for a new cafe in our Chippenham High Street development.

“Starbucks’ unit will benefit from return frontage onto the River Avon, giving their customers a beautiful outlook over the River Avon.

“With Starbucks joining Tesco in our tenant line-up, we’re excited to see the building operational again, bringing life back to this part of the High Street.”
