McDonald’s has scrapped plans for another restaurant in Wiltshire.

The fast food giant seemed set to open a second Chippenham branch at Hathaway Retail Park after having multiple planning applications approved.

Documents within these proposals said McDonald’s was planning several changes to the current Bensons for Beds unit in relation to a “proposed restaurant” at the site.

But despite getting the green light for these alterations from Wiltshire Council, McDonald’s says it no longer plans to move forward with any venture at the unit.

When asked for an update, a spokesperson said: “This is no longer a site we’re looking to take on.”

The chain’s plans for Chippenham had been controversial with residents split over the idea of another branch.

Concerns were raised by councillors that a McDonald’s would worsen existing traffic at the retail park.

The news leaves the long-term future of the store in doubt, after an application to change its use to a restaurant and takeaway was approved in January.

Real estate firm Savills has relisted the unit as available to let on property website Rightmove, within the last seven days.

The site had previously been described as “under offer”, but the listing no longer says this is the case.
