A newly opened Thai cafe has promised customers a laidback atmosphere with a “street food feeling.”

WaraThai Cafe opened its doors for the first time at The Bridge in Chippenham on Thursday, June 13, after moving into the former Lucky Eat Chinese Takeaway unit.

The town’s latest food venue has been opened by the owners of WaraThai, a restaurant that has been operating on Granville Road in Melksham since last year.

But director and owner Shousong Wu says WaraThai cafe will offer a different, more relaxed experience for customers.

He said: “We’re serving Thai food but we’re trying to do it in a bit of a different way, we want it to have more of a street feeling.

“It will be quick and easy, whether you’ve got stir-fry or curry everything will come together, you won’t have to order sides separately and it will be more affordable.

“We want people to be able to order one dish and have enough food… the Melksham restaurant is a bit more formal and about fine dining, but this is easier.”

Over the last two months, the business has been carrying out a full refurbishment of the former takeaway.

This process was hit by a range of issues and delays but has now been completed, and Mr Wu is excited to have opened to customers.

Speaking after the cafe’s opening day, he added: “It’s been busy trying to get everything ready and set up properly, there have been plenty of challenges but we got through the first day.

“We needed to get the job done and that’s what we did.

“I think it will keep getting better, we know what we’re doing now and we’ve had people coming in so the first day wasn’t bad.”

The venue has been decorated with a large mural of a floating market to give the space an authentic Thai feel.

Mr Wu added: “It’s a really nice place, it’s comfortable but there are still a lot of details we’re trying to get right.

“We’ve got a painting of the floating market because it’s related to Thailand and ourselves.

“The boat noodle is a popular, famous food in Thailand, so we wanted something to relate to that.”

WaraThai is currently not taking any reservations but customers can walk in during the opening hours of 11am to 9pm, between Sunday and Thursday, or 11am to 9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
