Uncertainty surrounds the future of a popular Wiltshire pub which has reportedly closed with no plans to reopen.

The Moonrakers pub, on Nursteed Road in Devizes, closed its doors to customers on Sunday, June 9, according to Cllr Iain Wallis, the representative for Devizes North.

Cllr Wallis says no plan for reopening the pub has yet been made clear, and other customers have confirmed the weekly pub quiz has been moved to the Cavalier pub on Eastleigh Road.

Speaking on Facebook, Cllr Wallis told residents: “I have been informed that the Moonrakers will be closing this evening and a plan for reopening is not yet known.”

Wadworth, the brewery which owns the venue, says it is aware of these posts but has not yet been contacted by the current tenants.

A spokesperson added: “We have also seen the same social posts alluding to the fact that it has closed.

“Sadly, the business partners, who have been well supported by us over the last few years, have not made any contact with us, so unfortunately, we are not able to make any further comment at the moment.”

The pub remained closed on the evening of Tuesday, June 11, despite being due to open between noon and 11pm.

On Sunday, June 9, the pub posted from its Facebook and Instagram accounts to advertise it was open and serving food from noon.

No further posts have been published since and the pub’s online booking system presents customers with a message informing them it is not currently accepting online bookings.

The current tenants at Moonrakers were contacted for comment but are yet to respond.

Customers and residents have reacted with sadness on social media to the news that the pub may have closed for a significant period of time.

Cassie Topliss said: “Just had a roast here today (Sunday, June 9) and had no idea it was closing up.

“I hope something gets resolved, it's such a lovely pub with lovely staff.”

Carol Keeler added: “This is very sad (it’s) been a part of Devizes for years.

“(I) Remember using the off licence as a young person to buy crisps back in the 1970s.”

On Wadworth’s website, The Moonrakers is described as a “family friendly pub” and steakhouse based just outside the centre of Devizes.

The listing said: “Delicious pub food is served along with a great selection of beers and wines.”
