Speed limits of 20mph speed are set to be implemented on dozens of residential roads in Wiltshire.

In November last year, Wiltshire Council approved a proposal to introduce 20mph restrictions on dozens of roads in the Hardenhuish ward of Chippenham.

Now, six months later, the town council has voted to fund 50 per cent of the £11,000 scheme, giving it the green light to proceed.

The lengthy list of roads affected by the project includes Barrow Green and Hill Rise, which has previously been branded a safety concern by residents and councillors.

In 2019 12-year-old cyclist Zack Lang died on the road after being knocked down by a car on his way home from school.

At the time his family called for safety improvements on Hill Rise, including a reduction in the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph.

Other residents living in the area have requested similar changes.

Cllr Matthew Short spoke of the importance of implementing and enforcing the scheme.

He said: “I fully support this one, it’s been through a long process as we all know, in financial terms it’s not a big financial contribution.

“It covers such a big area of the town. It covers walks to schools, St Paul’s School and the cut-through to Hardenhuish School, so I think it’s a really important thing to fund.

“It would be terrible if we didn’t approve it.”

Other councillors hope the decision will act as a “catalyst” to spark the introduction of similar projects in other areas of the town.

Cllr Ross Henning, the Wiltshire Council representative for Lowden and Rowden, said: “This has already gone out to consultation.

“It has been sanctioned by the cabinet member so it’s ready to go.

“It was sanctioned six months ago now, I want to get it in place because I want to see the reaction that builds over a large residential area.

“I would like to see, somewhere in the future, other large residential areas of Chippenham covered by 20mph, subject to consultation.”
