Parking spaces just off Marlborough’s High Street could be removed after concerns have been raised about safety and traffic.

Although there are only three parking spaces on Pewsey Road road, which connects to the town’s High Street, councillors believe that they could be a cause of congestion.

From just a short trip out to the street, the issue are clear to see, as traffic on either side of the parked cars had to be held to allow the opposite lane to pass through.

Marlborough Town Council has now launched a traffic survey and modelling to test out how Marlborough’s traffic would cope if the parking spaces on Pewsey Road were removed.

According to Cllr Caroline Sadler, Marlborough needs more free parking for residents and workers, not less.

Cllr Sadler, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years, pointed out that residents of the High Street with no parking use these spaces and were very likely to object to their removal.

"Those spaces are used by residents of Marlborough and we're currently waiting for some evidence and research at the moment that the council has asked for.

"I do believe there are parking issues in the town, and certainly for residents who don't have their own parking spaces because of the age of their houses, it's an issue.

"For people who come and work in the businesses and shops here, they ideally want to park without paying too much," she added.

"I believe that parking can be very expensive especially now they've introduced Sunday charges which we didn't have before."

Cllr Sadler told the Gazette and Herald she was keen to see more free parking spaces for residents in the town, but couldn't comment further on Pewsey Road until more research had been done.

Across the town, a lack of parking options seemed to be an issue that chimed with many workers and residents.

"In the High Street it is very much standstill a lot of the time and people do pull over and just leave their cars running sometimes because they can't park," said a spokesperson for the Marlborough Bike Company on Kingsbury Street.

The results of the Pewsey Road parking modelling are expected to be released in the Town Council's next planning meeting on Monday, June 10.

The council said it will then be able to make evidence-led decisions about the future of Pewsey Road's parking based on these results.
