A former hospital site in Wiltshire is on the market for nearly £2 million after significant redevelopment plans were approved.
Now the land has been put up for sale ahead of the potential development and is listed as available for offers in the region of £1,750,000.
NHS Property Services, which currently owns the land and submitted the application for the proposed development, launched the scheme in 2022 after the facilities became surplus to requirements.
Under the current plans, which were approved by the Eastern Area Planning Committee despite some significant objections, a total of 58 new homes would be created.
16 of these will be created by a partial conversion of two of the original buildings to the eastern boundary of the site.
A further 42 dwellings will also be constructed.
This includes 38 proposed apartments, ranging from one to three bedrooms, and 20 two and three-bedroom houses.
There is also planning permission for a small flexible commercial unit.
It has previously been suggested by NHS Property Services that this could become a potential cafe, restaurant, or retail space.
The former hospital became disused in 2022 after services were relocated to the £10.9 million Integrated Care Centre on Marshall Road.
The NHS believes redeveloping the land would present a chance to breathe new life into the site.
When the plans were revealed, a spokesperson for NHS Property Services said: “The opportunity now exists to create a new neighbourhood of homes and green open space on the banks of the Kennet and Avon Canal.
“Not only will this provide much-needed housing, but it will also provide an opportunity to generate revenue to be reinvested into the local health service.
“Located within a short walk of town centre services and a stone’s throw from the Sustrans National Cycle Route alongside the canal, we have the opportunity to deliver a highly sustainable development which contributes to the regeneration of the wharf area.”
The plans had been called in for discussion at the area planning committee after councillors raised concerns over a lack of proposed affordable housing, but were ultimately approved.
The original Devizes Cottage Hospital was founded in 1872 and significant additional buildings were added in 1926.
Further buildings were constructed throughout its operating period and the hospital was used up until November 2022.
