The incident took place shortly after 8am and was one of two crashes on the stretch of road in quick succession.
Ambulance and fire services also rushed to the scene.
A spokesperson from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to the M4 eastbound between junction 17 and junction 16 at 8.23am this morning (March 27) after a car collided with the central reservation.
“Two crews from Chippenham attended but no-one was trapped and no action from us was needed, so our stop was at 8.51am.”
All lanes were reopened within an hour of the crash with the vehicles involved moved to the hard shoulder ahead of recovery.
