A national retailer has denied claims it will be replacing a Tesco superstore that is set to close in Wiltshire.
The retailer has occupied the largest premises in the shopping centre since 2008, but will now relocate to a smaller base on the High Street.
Rumours had been swirling on social media that M&S would be taking over the unit and opening a new store.
But M&S has now denied these claims.
A representative for the business told this paper that their property teams are not currently looking at the Emery Gate site, and they are unsure where the rumours have come from.
Many residents had hoped to see the large unit filled by a new M&S store.
Tesco did not confirm a closure date for the current supermarket when asked.
Their relocation will see them open a Tesco Express shop at a smaller unit in the former Wilko building.
A spokesperson said: “We have taken the difficult decision to close our Chippenham Superstore.
“We have however secured a new smaller premises in Chippenham town centre which we will open as Tesco Chippenham High Street Express, and we look forward to continuing to serve our customers at our local stores.”
