Major reconstruction works at a historic Wiltshire hotel have reached a milestone with the venue set to expand.
A comprehensive restoration project has been ongoing at the prominent Lansdowne Strand Hotel, in Calne, to return the outbuildings at the rear to their former glory.
The buildings, an old barn and stable block, were transformed over the last 12 months and will now be converted into extra letting rooms for the Arkell’s Brewery-owned hotel.
This comes after the completion of structural works, marked by a topping out ceremony in which the final tile was placed on the old barn.
Managing director George Arkell said: “We’ve invested nearly a million pounds in restoring this historical gem, making it not only structurally sound but also bringing it back into use.
“We are pleased to be moving into phase two, which will be to initially add eight letting rooms in the old maltings.”
Cllr MacNaughton added the development had “revived” a part of Calne’s history.
The Grade II listed building is five centuries old but the outbuildings have been “crumbling” for the last 20 years and were “unsafe” to enter.
This project, led by Edmont Ltd, focused on retaining as much of the original building as possible.
The hotel and pub, managed by Joel and Anna Lear, is renowned for its two AA rosettes.
