A Wiltshire market town has been labelled one of the prettiest rural destinations in the UK by a national newspaper.
Devizes was the subject of a feature by the Express on New Year’s Eve in which the town was called the West Country’s “best kept secret”.
Residents will be pleased to have seen the town lauded for its “streets lined with independent shops and ample walking destinations”, all of which are said to be enhanced by a “friendly atmosphere.”
This praise comes after Devizes was named The London Economic’s top pick in their top 10 places to live and escape to the country in 2021.
In this list, locals were once again recognised for their “ferocious support” of the town’s “wonderful and quirky” independent shops as well as its “thriving” market.
Another feature of Devizes singled out for praise was the walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal taking visitors down to the “amazing” Caen Hill Locks.
The proximity of Devizes to some of the county’s most picturesque scenery also drew plaudits.
The article said: “Devizes is the West Country’s best-kept secret.
“The town is tucked away on the edge of both Salisbury Plain and the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
“It is surrounded by epic landscapes, rolling hills and tranquil canals.”
