The family of a motorcyclist killed in a crash on the Wiltshire/Somerset border are calling on the community to come together to help cover his funeral costs.
Jamie Howarth was pronounced dead at the scene of an incident involving a car, motorcycle, and combine harvester on Marsh Road in Standerwick, near Frome, at around 5pm on August 22.
According to his family, the 34-year-old was riding home from work and the crash happened 10 minutes from his house.
Jamie’s family are trying to cope with the grief while worrying about funeral costs.
His mum Sharon Hymas said: “As a mother, I never expected to ever have to cover the costs of a funeral for my son. I don’t think it’s something that crosses any mother’s mind.
“But I know how much our community kindly support and help people in need in tragic times. I’ve learned this more so over the last month and I have had so many kind messages from strangers which has given me and my family so much comfort.
“My daughter has now set up a GoFundMe page to lessen the financial burden for our family,” she said.
Jamie’s sister Nicola Howarth, who set up the page on behalf of her family, has described Jamie as “a lover of bikes” and “a happy go lucky free spirit".
“His bike was his pride and joy and he went all over on it enjoying every ride right up until the day he died,” she said.
“We want to give Jamie the best send-off possible, but it’s a lot of extra cost for us as a family that we were obviously never expecting.
“Jamie was loved by so many people and he had so many friends nationwide in Newton Aycliffe where he was born and in Wiltshire. Any help would be absolutely appreciated no matter how small," she added.
So far, £840 has been raised, with a target of £2,000.
Jamie’s funeral will take place at Haycombe Crematorium on September 22 and members of a local motorbike riding group will be riding to the crematorium as an escort for Jamie.
“He was a confident rider who loved taking part in bike meets when ever he could," his family said. "This is going to be his final journey and I know he’d want bikes to escort him on his final ride."
