A village post office is set to close this month after the Grade II listed hotel housing it went up for sale.

The Sutton Benger Post Office, just south of the M4, will shut permanently to customers on September 21, according to staff currently working in the shop.

The village post office is currently located at The Bell House Hotel on the High Street, which has been put on the market by owner Chris Williams.

Earlier this year Mr Williams put forward a planning application to partially demolish the existing building and erect four new dwellings alongside a village shop.

This was intended to provide greater community services and bolster the “economic viability of the businesses.”

But despite some support, the plans were withdrawn after a number of objections, including from a Wiltshire Council highways officer due to a lack of adequate parking spaces.

The premises has since been put up for sale on property website Rightmove and was described as an “excellent opportunity for refurbishment.”

The 17th century hotel contains 14 ensuite bedrooms as well as a main bar and restaurants.

While the search for a buyer continues, estate agents Fleurets say the hotel continues to trade and would offer an opportunity for “further enhancement.”

Mr Williams declined to comment on the future of the hotel.
