Plans have been lodged for over 200 new homes on the outskirts of a Wiltshire town.

The land at Penn Hill, off Sand Pit Road in Calne, has been earmarked by developers for a huge scheme boasting 205 residential dwellings alongside an employment hub taking up nearly a hectare of land.

An outline planning application was submitted to Wiltshire Council on September 1, by developers Castlewood Commercial Properties, but at this stage many of the design details remain reserved.

The new scheme is one of several large-scale developments put forward in the area.

Plans for up to 100 new homes just off the nearby Spitfire Road are currently under consultation while a further 200 properties between the current site and Oxford Road were approved in 2019.

In their design and access statement, Castlewood say the site “provides an opportunity to bring forward much-needed housing in a sustainable location.”

Primary access to the site would be located on Oxford Road.

While the land is currently used for agriculture and mostly made up of fields, with a public footpath running through them, some existing buildings on the site would have to be demolished if the proposal is approved.

At the time of writing no formal objections to the development have been made.
