The King’s representative in Wiltshire took part in celebrations across the county during the coronation which she described as ‘pure joy’.
The Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire Mrs Sarah Troughton is a long-standing friend of Queen Camilla and attended the coronation service with her husband Peter Troughton on Saturday May 6.
The next day they welcomed Princess Anne to Swindon and then attended a celebration in Salisbury.
She said, “It was a 5am start then into Westminster Abbey. There was wonderful music, very holy, and serious but simply magnificent service. We felt deeply honoured to be there.
“Meanwhile on Sunday morning we started off with a very lovely service at Christ Church in Swindon. The church was packed. Then we went down to Marlborough in the high street. We were met by the new mayor Councillor Nicholas Fogg and it was really marvellous.
“It’s the widest high street in Britain and the whole length of it was taken over with tables and lunches. There were people on stilts, hula-hoop ladies, cakes and champagnes popping.
“I’m very proud to see the county really pulled all the stops out and had fantastic celebrations.
“We were like yoyos because we then went back to Swindon to welcome HRH The Princess Royal and her husband VA Sir Tim Laurence who joined in the big lunch at Belmont Crescent in Old Town.
“We then dashed down to Salisbury Cathedral where there was a full civic coronation service.”
The Lord-Lieutenant finished her weekend attending a Big Help Out charity event on Monday May 8, when she joined St John Ambulance volunteers as they launched a new defibrillator at Dauntsey Lock.
She added: “It was a weekend of pure joy and celebration. We were on our knees by Monday afternoon, but we had a lovely time.”
She said she had not spoken to Queen Camilla since the coronation but added “I happen to know they both thought it went extremely well and they were incredibly grateful and thrilled that so many people came out to see them.”
In 2022, Mrs Troughton became one of the six women appointed as "Queen's companions" to Queen Camilla.
She said “the role has not really started yet as there has been too much going on but we are there to accompany the Queen on her bigger events. We are not going to go out with her every time she goes around the counties, but we are there to support her at the bigger events that she does.”
