The ground at the B4069 Lyneham Banks has continued to move a year after a major landslip, posing a “significant” challenge to repair works.

Wiltshire Council confirmed the ground in the area has remained unstable long after a huge landslip caused the road to close, sending some sections over 25 metres down the hillside.

Cllr Caroline Thomas, the cabinet member for transport, said: “Solving this huge problem and rebuilding the road is a major undertaking of significant scale, and it is presenting several engineering challenges.

“In particular, because the ground has continued to move, it has been difficult to get both people and machinery to work on the site safely, which is of paramount importance."

The council were able to safely access the site and carry out intrusive surveys following a period of reduced ground movement in summer 2022 and completed their investigations before Christmas.

A ground investigation report which will inform repair plans is currently being prepared, and the council will offer the public an update on the project during a webinar on April 24.

Cllr Thomas added: “We appreciate how difficult the closure of the B4069 Lyneham Banks has been for the local community.

“This webinar is a great opportunity for anyone with an interest in the project to find out more and have their questions answered.”
